Call for 1 Master Research fellowship (BL273/2017) (closed)



Applications are open for one master fellowship within the framework of project “Kraken-Ocean – Um Braço Robótico Manipulador para Operações Offshore”, OCEANERA/0002/2016, with the support of FCT/MCTES, through national funds (PIDDAC), in the following conditions:

Scientific Area: Control, Automation and Industrial Informatics

Admission Requirements:

1)      Master degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics or Electrical Engineering

2)      Knowledge of MATLAB and C++

3)      Research or academic experience in the scientific area specified above

It is a preferential factor for selection that the fellow enrolls in the PhD in Mechanical Engineering of IST during the period of the fellowship, and under the guidance of the same scientific advisor.

Workplan: The goal of this project is to deliver a viable robotic arm to be used underwater with an observation/intermediate class Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The fellow will be in charge of design and development of the Human-Robot Interface and of the Robotic Arm Controller. These tasks will involve mechanical and controller design, acquisition of components, assembly, integration with the complete Kraken robotic manipulator system and experimental validation.

Workplace: The work will be developed at Scientific Area of Control, Automation and Industrial Informatics, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, Lisboa, Portugal, under the scientific supervision of Professor Jorge Martins.

Duration: The research fellowship will have the duration of 6 months. It’s expected to begin in January 2018 and may eventually be renewed up to a maximum of 13 months (until 31/07/2019).

Monthly maintenance allowance: According to the values for Research Fellowships awarded by FCT in Portugal (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores) the amount of the monthly maintenance allowance is € 980 being the payment method an option of the Fellow by Wire Transfer/Check.

Selection methods: The selection methods will be the following: 1) Curriculum evaluation and 2) Individual interview (if necessary), with the respective weight of 80% for curriculum evaluation and 20% for the individual interview. The unavailability of the candidate to pursue a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering at IST under the supervision of Professor Jorge Martins and during the duration of the fellowship may be a factor for exclusion of the application.
